What happened to film,
and why do I need a digital camera?

I know many friends and family members that absolutely refuse to give up their old 35mm cameras and go digital. At first I laugh at them, but then I start asking them why. Part of the stubbornness is pride, but I am willing to bet that most of them simply don't understand the way that digital media works and therefore don't see the benefit. Well I'm here to tell you that we are very quickly moving into a digital age where the value of digital media will become so powerful that you'll wonder how we ever lived without it in the first place.

The first reason that digital media is so important, is because of storage space. Digital media offers a cheaper alternative than physical media when it comes to storage. You can store a thousand pictures on a memory card the size of a quarter, but physically storing 1,000 pictures would take up an entire shelf in your closet. Now what happens when you have 10,000 photos to store? Not only that, but film and prints are so fragile that eventually they will either get damaged or over exposed, causing an entire childhood to get wiped away in the process. Digital photos can be backed up within minutes and can be transferred onto any other media, such as CD or DVD, with ease.

You also have to consider the quality of digital pictures versus old fashioned film. You can buy a cheap digital camera that is a huge upgrade over the old quality 35mm cameras. You don't have to buy film either, which makes it a onetime purchase. Although you do have to pay to have pictures printed, they are usually much cheaper and easier to get printed than film. You can email pictures to a store and they will be printed by the time you get there. If you are really serious about saving money and doing everything yourself, then you can buy photo paper and print pictures from home. It doesn't get any more convenient than that.

I've saved my favorite piece for last though, because I am so excited about the future of this technology. You can now buy digital picture frames that can take an SD card and display each and every photo on that card without you having to remove anything. The way of buying frames and individually inserting pictures is past, with digital media you can do everything with ease. There is simply no reason to stick with film, especially when it becomes obsolete. SD cards cost $5-$20 bucks and can store upwards of several thousand pictures. Aren't you tired of carrying around rolls of film?

So do yourself a favor and start singing the praises of digital media to everyone you know. Not only do you deserve to have a digital life, but so does all your friends and family. Cameras are only going to continue to get cheaper and carry even more functionality, such as video. It is exciting to be part of this rapid transformation in technology, I hope you are willing to join me.
